Post  ken on Thu Mar 26, 2009 4:25 pm

Well think I've found my first Roman coin of the year, a large bronze approx 40mm diameter and 4-6mm thick, a standing female figure with raised arm one side and a badly corroded poss female head the other, deep neck curve. face side obliterated by corrosion. Sad
found in new field for me 1st sweep up the field, sodds law.
handed it over to the Numismatics section for ID
Now looking for the rest of the treasure. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Yes you can be pretty sure they are Roman just by the feel and weight of them, the later 3rd and fourth century coins were a bit more like our own, cheap and thin and poor quality, there wont be any modern coinage left after 10 years burried in our soil. this one could have been there 1800 years and is still readable, just. Cool Cool Cool
